Toppings

  • to taste red pepper flakes For an optional touch of heat.

Method

Cooking the Pasta
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a vigorous boil. Add a generous pinch of salt and then the penne pasta. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until al dente, then drain and set aside.
Preparing the Sausage and Vegetables
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the ground Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Brown for about 5 minutes.
Adding Vegetables
  1. Add the diced red and green bell peppers and finely diced yellow onion to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the veggies soften and the sausage is fully cooked.
Incorporating Marinara Sauce
  1. Pour the jar of marinara sauce over the sausage and vegetable mixture. Stir until combined and heat for 2-3 minutes until the sauce bubbles.
Combining with Pasta
  1. Toss the cooked pasta directly into the skillet, stirring until evenly coated, or serve the sausage mixture over individual bowls of pasta.
Finishing Touches
  1. Top the plated dish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes, if desired.
