Ingredients

For the Pretzel Rods
  • 24 pieces pretzel rods About one 12 oz. bag of pretzel rods.
  • 11 oz. caramels Soft and creamy for a sweet base.
  • 1 tablespoon water Helps melt the caramels.
  • 12 oz. chocolate candy melts or Almond Bark coating For coating the pretzel rods.
  • 2 teaspoons shortening To create a silky texture for the melted chocolate.
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans Adds nutty crunch.

Method

Preparation
  1. Cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
Melt the Caramels
  1. In a small saucepan, combine caramels and water. Melt over low heat, stirring continuously until smooth.
Dip the Pretzel Rods
  1. Dip about 2/3 of each pretzel rod into the hot caramel, allowing excess to drip back into the saucepan. Place dipped rods on the greased sheet to cool.
Melt the Chocolate Coating
  1. In a small deep bowl, melt the chocolate candy melts (or almond bark) and shortening in the microwave, heating in 30-second intervals and stirring until smooth.
Coat with Chocolate
  1. Once caramel-coated pretzels have cooled, dip the caramel end into the melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip back into the bowl. Return to the foil-lined sheet.
Add the Pecans
  1. Immediately sprinkle finely chopped pecans over the wet chocolate coating, then let the pretzel rods stand until the chocolate sets.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For larger batches, keep the caramel warm in the microwave if it thickens. Experiment with different nuts or drizzle with white chocolate for variation.
