  • 1½ lbs ground lamb Rich and succulent; can substitute with ground beef
For Serving
  • 6 pieces pita bread rounds Or use hamburger buns
  • 1 small head iceberg lettuce, shredded For crispy texture
  • 2 pieces tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 piece red onion, thinly sliced Adds sharpness
  • 6 oz crumbled feta cheese Classic Greek addition
  • to taste tzatziki sauce For topping

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your grill to high heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the white bread pieces and milk. Mash them together until a paste forms.
  3. To the bread mixture, add the shallots, garlic, mint, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  4. Gently add the ground lamb to the bowl. Mix everything together until thoroughly combined but do not overwork the meat.
  5. Shape the mixture into 6 oval-shaped patties, each about ½-in (13-cm) thick.
Cooking
  1. Lightly oil the grilling grates. Place the patties on the grill, cover, and cook for about 2 to 4 minutes until browned. Flip the burgers and cook until desired doneness.
  2. Once cooked, keep the burgers warm covered with foil. Warm the pita rounds on the grill for a minute or two until soft.
Assembly
  1. Place the grilled patties in warmed pita rounds. Top with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, crumbled feta, and tzatziki sauce.

Notes

Consider using a meat thermometer for doneness, and allow the burgers to rest for a few minutes before serving. Fresh herbs are preferable for better flavor.
